Translucent in sunlight Miss transforms before your eyes. This Carrara marble sculpture by Irish artist Emma Louise Moore offers a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow. We’re standing at the bottom of Cubitt Steps in Canary Wharf. Here Miss joins over 100 other works in the UK’s largest free-to-visit, outdoor, public art collection.

Canary Wharf Group unveiled Miss this summer. The sculpture is placed at the dock’s edge. It turns translucent in sunlight. Its surface reflects the water and surrounding architecture. As the light shifts throughout the day Miss transforms. It invites you to pause and marvel at the interplay of art, time and the urban environment.

Emma Louise Moore is known for sculptures. They explore the ephemerality of nature and humanity’s ecological literacy. Moore says she is very excited to have this piece brought to Canary Wharf. She is pleased to have it placed within the cityscape of the area’s architecture. Sunlight bounces endlessly around the reflective surfaces of Canary Wharf. It will be the perfect position for the Carrara marble piece to illuminate. Moore is also very pleased the sculpture will be placed next to a body of water. It will bounce additional light around it. It will return to elements of nature. She hopes the locals and visitors to the area enjoy the yearly cycle of the work.

Lowri Harries is the Associate Curator of Public Art at CWG. Harries says they’re excited to welcome Emma Louise Moore’s latest work to their permanent public art collection.
