What remains of Mirapolis now? Let’s explore the ghostly remnants of France’s ambitious answer to Disneyland. Mirapolis, once envisioned as a grand cultural theme park, met a tragic end. Mirapolis opened in 1987 near Paris. It was meant to showcase French literature and culture. The park featured a massive Gargantua statue. This gentle giant housed a dark ride within. Mirapolis boasted 29 attractions, numerous restaurants, shops, and food kiosks. It could accommodate up to 28,000 visitors daily. Mirapolis was divided into eight themed areas. The Prime Minister himself, Jacques Chirac, inaugurated Mirapolis. Sadly, the park’s first year was plagued by relentless rain. Many outdoor attractions were canceled due to bad weather. Visitors often sought refuge in the Grand Théâtre. There, a children’s musical called “Partir à point” entertained the crowds. It featured giant puppets based on the works of Jean de La Fontaine. The famous singer Carlos became Mirapolis’ sponsor in 1988. However, despite these efforts, the park never turned a profit. Mirapolis closed its gates in 1991. Mirapolis fell victim to poor market research, overly optimistic financial forecasts, and perhaps an outdated image. Demolition began in 1993. Most of the structures were dismantled and sold. The iconic Gargantua statue, however, proved resistant. Its head was finally dynamited in 1995. Today, only fragments remain. You can find remnants of the entrance fences, overgrown pathways, and a park with a small lake. Mirapolis stands as a reminder of a dream unfulfilled.
