“Ever dream of seeing Rio’s mountains from a completely new angle?” Here at Mirante da Tapera, that dream becomes reality. Let me tell you about this special place. Mirante da Tapera offers more than just a view. It provides a unique perspective.
This spot reveals the stunning mountains of Rio de Janeiro. It is from an angle you won’t find anywhere else. We stand 240 meters above sea level. The view is truly incredible.
Mirante da Tapera is part of the Travessia Tupinambá. This is Niterói’s largest trail. It stretches about 7.5 kilometers. The trail connects Parque da Cidade to Piratininga Beach. The Travessia Tupinambá was inaugurated in August 2017. Since then, it has attracted many visitors. They come to experience the beautiful Mata Atlântica.
As you explore the Travessia Tupinambá, look for the trail markers. Arrows on trees and signs guide you. They help you feel secure on your journey. About 20 minutes into the walk, you will see a sign. It points to a short detour to Mirante da Pedra Quebrada. From there, you can see the park’s vegetation. In the background, you will see Serra Carioca.
Continuing on the trail, you will pass various terrains. Always follow the signs. After the Mirante dos Tamoios, the path descends. Soon you will find a natural viewpoint. It overlooks the Piratininga Lagoon.
After passing a bamboo grove, you will climb over some rocks. You will cross a small stream. Then you will start ascending the mountain. You continue until you reach another sign. This sign presents a choice. The left path leads to the end of the crossing. The right path leads to two more viewpoints. I suggest you take the right path. It’s worth the extra 15 to 20 minutes.
After a moderate climb of 10 minutes, you will reach a fork. The left path takes you to a viewpoint. It faces the Piratininga Lagoon. The right path goes to Mirante da Tapera.
After a short walk, you’ll find the main Mirante da Tapera. From here, the views are expansive. You can see the beaches of Niterói. Look for Piratininga, Camboinhas, and Itaipu. In the distance, you’ll spot Morro das Andorinhas. You’ll also see Costão de Itacoatiara and Pedra do Elefante.
From another point at Mirante da Tapera, see the forts of Niterói. There is the Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra. You can also see the Forte Barão do Rio Branco. It houses Forte São Luiz and Forte do Pico. In the background, admire the Serra Carioca. Spot Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, Pedra da Gávea, and Morro Dois Irmãos. It is truly an unique angle.
After soaking in the views, head back to the trail. Walk for about 40 minutes to reach the end of the Travessia Tupinambá. It ends in the Jardim Imbuí neighborhood of Piratininga.
