Quito. San Francisco de Quito. This is its official name. It stands as Ecuador’s proud capital. Quito is not just any city. It is the capital at the highest altitude in the world. We stand roughly 2850 meters above sea level. This height lends Quito a unique charm.

The story of Quito stretches back far. It goes back to around 1030 a. C. People lived near the Inga Hacienda. These were nomadic tribes. They hunted and gathered. Later the Quitu people formed a confederation. They inhabited the Guayllabamba river basin.

In the 15th century the Incas arrived. They transformed Quito into a vital city in their vast empire. However, this reign was not to last. Spanish conquistadors came in 1534. Sebasti\u00e1n de Belalc\u00e1zar founded San Francisco de Quito on December 6. This happened on the ruins of the Inca city.

Quito grew in importance during colonial times. It became the seat of the Province of Quito. This was an important part of the Spanish Empire. The city was a hub of revolution. Locals sought independence between 1809 and 1812. They failed initially. Quito was finally freed in 1822 after the Battle of Pichincha. The city then joined Gran Colombia. In 1830 Quito became the capital of the Republic of Ecuador.

In 1978 UNESCO recognized Quito’s unique value. It was the first city to be declared a World Heritage Site. The city has well-preserved colonial architecture. It is a testament to its rich past.

Quito’s name has interesting origins. Some say it means “land in the middle of the world”. However, linguists suggest it comes from the Quechua word “kitu”. This means “dove”. Perhaps Quito was named for the many doves in the valley.

The city is divided into 32 urban parishes. It is Ecuador’s second-most populous city. About 1,763,275 people live here. The greater Quito area has about 2,679,722 residents.

Quito is a city of contrasts. Modern buildings stand next to historic plazas. Indigenous cultures blend with Spanish influences. It is a vibrant center for business, finance, culture and sports.
