Ever wondered where water hides in an arid landscape? Welcome to the Mirador de Vallebrón. Its name reveals a secret. “Vallebrón” comes from “Valle de ahemon”. “Ahemon” means “where there is water” or “hidden water” in the language of Fuerteventura’s ancient inhabitants.

Here at the Mirador de Vallebrón, the water is indeed hidden underground. The surface is a plain of dry earth. This viewpoint, also known as Mirador de la Degollada de Valle Grande, sits between La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario.

The Mirador de Vallebrón was inaugurated in 2007. It offers stunning views of northern Fuerteventura. From here you can spot Tindaya Mountain, El Cotillo, part of La Oliva and the southern Ezquinzo ravine. The Mirador de Vallebrón is on the northeast side of La Muda Mountain.

Look around. The protected landscape of Vallebrón features slopes arranged in long yellow terraces. This geomorphological unit features “cuchillo” and “morros” formations. “Cuchillo” means knife.

The area of Vallebrón spans over 1679 hectares. The average altitude is over 145 metres. La Muda Mountain, the highest point, reaches 689 metres. La Muda Mountain holds its own mysteries. Locals call it “the church of the mahos.” The mahos were Fuerteventura’s original inhabitants.

Ancient Canarian engravings and cave constructions mark La Muda. La Muda borders the Malpaís de la Arena Natural Monument and the Tindaya Natural Monument. This viewpoint of Vallebrón itself was declared a Natural Park of National Interest in 1987. Later in 1994 it was named a protected landscape of Spain.

For those seeking a challenge the Vallebrón trail extends for 16 km. Remember to bring water. Wear light clothing, sunscreen and trekking shoes. The trail passes through a U-shaped valley.

Keep an eye out for native species. You might see Canarian tabaiba, aulaga, mato and espino plants. Bird watchers may spot the native tarabilla and guirre.

Vallebrón offers a unique perspective. It’s a place where water’s presence shapes even the driest landscapes. As you leave Mirador de Vallebrón consider the hidden stories beneath your feet.
