Did you know that the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Memorial Garden isn’t actually in Minneapolis? It’s located on the grounds of the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul. This beautiful garden is a tribute to the tireless efforts of women who fought for the right to vote. It commemorates not only the national suffrage movement but also the 25 remarkable women who led the charge in Minnesota. They were members of the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Association or MWSA. Imagine their dedication. They marched. They lobbied. They even went to jail for their beliefs.

The garden itself is a peaceful place for reflection. It’s a landscape of change a Garden of Time as its officially called. The names of those 25 courageous women are inscribed on a trellis winding through the garden. It’s a moving reminder of their personal sacrifices for a larger cause. The garden’s design changed in 2004. Architect Roger Grothe redesigned the original landscape. The garden was originally designed by Ralph Nelson and Raveevarn Choksombatchi in 2000. It was dedicated on August 26th Women’s Equality Day. This was eighty years after the 19th Amendment was ratified granting women the right to vote.

Minnesota played a significant role in the national suffrage movement. It was the 15th state to ratify the 19th Amendment. This is a vital piece of American history. Minnesota women began organizing for suffrage as early as the 1870s. They secured the right to vote in school board elections in 1875. This was a small but meaningful victory. The MWSA a powerful organization was founded in 1881 by Sarah Berger Stearns and Harriet Bishop. They recruited hundreds of women to their cause. Their efforts even convinced the national American Woman Suffrage Association AWSA to hold their 1885 convention in Minneapolis.

The MWSA continued its tireless work. They lobbied repeatedly for a state constitutional amendment. Their goal was to remove the word male from voter registration requirements. Despite their persistent efforts they faced setbacks. The movement gained momentum nationally with the 1913 Suffrage Procession in Washington DC. Inspired the MWSA organized its own massive parade in the Twin Cities in 1914. Over two thousand women participated a powerful show of solidarity and determination. Minnesota women were also active in the more confrontational tactics of the National Woman’s Party. Many were arrested for their activism at the White House. Their commitment was unwavering.

By 1919 the combined membership of all the suffrage organizations in Minnesota exceeded 30000. Their collective pressure led the legislature to approve the right for women to vote for president. This was a major victory though full suffrage was still to be achieved. That same year Congress passed the 19th Amendment. Minnesota’s ratification on September 8 1919 made it the 15th state to do so. The garden serves as a vital reminder that the right to vote was hard won. It should never be taken for granted. It’s a powerful testament to the courage resilience and unwavering dedication of the women who fought for equality.
