Welcome to the Minnesota History Center! This magnificent building, designed by the Minneapolis architectural firm of Hammel Green and Abrahamson, is a treasure trove of stories and artifacts. It’s a living testament to our state’s rich past, showcasing a fascinating blend of history, culture, and innovation. The Minnesota History Center was built in 1992, but its roots run much deeper. Before this building was built, the Minnesota Historical Society occupied the current Minnesota Judicial Center, which had been built for them in 1917. But before that, the Minnesota Historical Society was housed in the basement of the State Capitol! This center is a must-visit for any visitor to Minneapolis. The Minnesota History Center boasts an extensive collection of over 1 million artifacts, including archaeological objects, books, photographs, maps, paintings, prints, drawings, manuscripts, government records, newspapers, and periodicals. These artifacts are stored in the 100,000 square feet of storage space available in the center. But the center itself is not just about storage. It’s also a vibrant hub of activity, hosting concerts, dance performances, lectures, conferences, meetings, dinners, political campaign events, memorial services, receptions, parties, and weddings. In fact, the History Center welcomes as many as 75,000 schoolchildren every year! The center also features the Gale Family Library on the second floor, offering resources for Minnesota Historical Society members and guests.
