Marvelous isn’t it? This is the Minnesota Governor’s Residence. More than just a house this grand building whispers stories of power and history.
The Minnesota Governor’s Residence isn’t located in Minneapolis. It’s actually in Saint Paul at 1006 Summit Avenue. Built in 1910-1912 this impressive English Tudor style house was originally the home of lumber businessman Horace Hills Irvine and his family. The Irvines lived here until 1965. That year they generously gifted the residence to the people of Minnesota. It became the official home of the state’s First Family.
Imagine the Irvines. They had a 20-room house with nine bedrooms eight bathrooms and nine fireplaces. That’s a lot of space for a family. The house was designed by Minneapolis architect William Channing Whitney. This is important because he was also involved in the Minnesota Building at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
The Minnesota Legislature made it official. They passed a law accepting the donation and designating the house as the State Ceremonial Building. This meant the house would be used for official public events and as the governor’s residence. The Minnesota Department of Administration now manages this historic building. The building has been updated over the years. It’s undergone renovations. The exterior however needs approval from the State Historic Preservation Office. This ensures it maintains its historical charm.
For many years governors could propose changes to the house. The Legislature provided funds and the Department of Administration oversaw the improvements. Even the furnishings weren’t just left to chance. A special committee helped furnish the place between 1965 and 1967.
A unique tradition takes place every Christmas season. A giant Christmas tree is selected from a Minnesota State Forest often near Pine City. This tree stands tall and proud on the front lawn adding a touch of festive magic to the Minnesota Governor’s Residence.
In 1974 the house achieved another honor. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This prestigious designation cemented the Minnesota Governor’s Residence’s place in history.
