What if I told you that the building in front of us, this grand edifice known as the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, has seen more changes than a farmer’s field throughout the seasons? Yes, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty has a long and fascinating history, dating back to the 19th century. You see, before 2022 it was simply known as the Ministry of Agriculture. But just like a crop rotation, governments change and names shift with them. In 2024, it will undergo yet another transformation, becoming the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty wasn’t always located here on Rue de Varenne. In fact, did you know that at the beginning of the 19th century, agricultural matters were handled by the Ministry of the Interior? It wasn’t until 1836 that the first Ministry of Agriculture was established. It’s amazing to think how much this building, now the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, has witnessed the evolution of French agriculture, from traditional farming practices to the complexities of today’s food industry.
