She gazes down upon us, this bronze goddess of wisdom, her eyes seemingly fixed on some distant future. You see, it’s Minerva, standing tall and proud in the Hennepin County Central Library. She arrived in 1889, a symbol of learning and culture.

The library was brand new then, a beacon of progress, and she was the perfect embodiment of its aspirations. Sculpted by Jacob H. Fjelde, a Norwegian-American artist, Minerva is a powerful figure, a testament to the enduring pursuit of knowledge. She stood in the original library on 10th Street and Hennepin Avenue.

When the library moved to Third Street and Nicollet Mall in 1961, Minerva moved too. She’s always been a part of the Minneapolis library story, travelling with it as it expanded and evolved. For a time she even went to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts for a special exhibit!

But eventually, she returned to the central library, settling into her current position amidst a modern and vibrant space. You might notice that she looks less like a stern goddess and more like a thoughtful observer. Maybe she’s reflecting on the journey of knowledge, the generations that have sought wisdom within these walls.

Look around. The library’s architecture is a testament to innovation and design, just as Minerva represents the eternal flame of learning. This is why it’s so fitting to see her here, a timeless figure in an ever-evolving world – a quiet reminder of the power of the written word and the enduring value of knowledge.
