What if a former railway wasteland could be transformed into a vibrant community park? Here in Mimersparken, that’s precisely what happened. This green oasis in Nørrebro, nestled between Nørrebro Station and Bispebjerg Station, was once a forgotten DSB area. In 2008, the City of Copenhagen saw the potential and purchased the land, setting in motion the creation of Mimersparken. This park wasn’t just plopped down. It was born from a larger revitalization project in the Mimersgade District, a bustling neighborhood with a young population. The district, packed with 16,000 residents, needed more green space. Mimersparken became a key part of a three-pronged partnership project focused on outdoor spaces. Alongside Nørrebrohallen, a sports and culture hub, and Superkilen, a vibrant activity strip, Mimersparken completes the trio. Before any construction began, Mimersparken served as an “activity test zone.” From 2008 to 2010, the municipality experimented with various temporary activities, gauging community interest and gathering ideas for the park’s future. This hands-on approach helped shape the final design, ensuring the park truly reflected the community’s needs. Designed by architect Paul Børling, Thing Brandt Landskab, and Peter Holst Arkitektur og Landskab, Mimersparken is a thoughtfully planned space. A soft, forest-like edge borders the train tracks, while an urban edge, complete with street basketball and ping pong, transitions towards Mjølnerparken. Within Mimersparken, distinct zones cater to diverse interests. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a soccer field and a multi-sport court. A parkour facility adds an adventurous twist. Families gather at playgrounds and barbecue areas, while those seeking tranquility can relax in the orchard. Even the climbing structure here in Mimersparken echoes the area’s history as a railway hub, its design a playful nod to hidden tracks and junctions. Mimersparken stands as a testament to the power of community vision and thoughtful urban planning, a vibrant space where the echoes of the past meet the energy of the present.
