Have you ever heard of a church that can trace its roots back to before the American Revolution? You are standing in front of one such church, the Milwood Baptist Church. Imagine, if you will, a small group of people gathering in a pavilion in Austin, Texas, way back in 1894. It was the start of a journey that would lead to the church you see before you today. The Milwood Baptist Church, part of the Hyde Park Baptist Church family, has been around since 1985. Milwood Baptist Church itself might be relatively young, but its origins are much deeper. The Hyde Park Baptist Church itself had its beginnings in 1894, as a small gathering of people hoping to establish a church in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The church’s roots go even further back, though. They are ultimately traced back to a church in South Carolina, founded by John D. Webb in Padgett’s Creek. You won’t see any plaques here celebrating its historical past. Instead, you’ll find a friendly congregation ready to welcome you into their church today. Milwood Baptist Church, along with the congregation it serves, is a story of faith, history and community.
