This isn’t your average landfill. The Millerhill Recycling and Energy Recovery Centre processes a staggering 155,000 tonnes of household and business waste annually. That’s like trying to recycle the weight of 21,000 elephants every year! The process starts with recovering recyclable materials – over 2,500 tonnes of it. Then, the remaining waste is incinerated to produce electricity, enough to power around 22,000 homes in Edinburgh and Midlothian. As we stand here, imagine the unseen energy flowing from this plant, bringing light and warmth to thousands.
But it doesn’t stop there. The Millerhill facility also generates heat, enough to meet the needs of approximately 10,000 homes. Even the ash produced during incineration is recycled and used in construction projects.
