Was it a beacon of hope or a lightning rod of controversy? The Millennium Transmitter, standing tall against the Manila skyline, has been both. This towering structure, located at the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Quezon City, has a history as dramatic as the telenovelas it once broadcast. The Millennium Transmitter, all 720 feet of it, isn’t just a transmitter. It’s a communications tower, a lattice giant holding antennas that have carried signals across Metro Manila and beyond. It began its life in 1968, rising from the ground at the corner of Mother Ignacia Street and Sgt. Esguerra Avenue. By March 21, 1969, it was operational, beaming television and radio signals for ABS-CBN. It even brought color broadcasts to the region. The tower wasn’t always under ABS-CBN’s control. When Martial Law was declared in 1972, ABS-CBN’s operations were suspended. The Millennium Transmitter fell into the hands of BBC-2 and later, People’s Television. It became a symbol of the changing political landscape. But its story didn’t end there. During the EDSA Revolution in 1986, the tower and the Broadcast Plaza were stormed by rebels. It was a pivotal moment in the fight for freedom. After the revolution, the Millennium Transmitter was returned to ABS-CBN. It continued to serve as the primary transmission point for DWWX-TV, DWRR radio, and later, DWAC-TV. The Millennium Transmitter even underwent a major renovation in 2009. Its height was increased, and its antennas were upgraded to more powerful models. This allowed for even wider coverage. Then came 2020. ABS-CBN’s legislative franchise expired, and the transmitter fell silent. It stood as a stark reminder of the power of media and politics. However, the silence wouldn’t last. In 2022, Advanced Media Broadcasting System (AMBS) began using the Millennium Transmitter for All TV broadcasts. It marked a new chapter in the tower’s history. Even some ABS-CBN programs found their way back onto the airwaves via this arrangement. So, as you stand before the Millennium Transmitter, remember its story. It’s a story of change, resilience, and the enduring power of broadcasting.
