Standing proud on The Ridgeway in Mill Hill, a grand memorial tells a story of sacrifice. The Mill Hill War Memorial. A symmetrical stone pylon adorned with bronze wreaths and a sword, its presence commands respect. This magnificent structure was unveiled on the 14th of November, 1920. It was designed by Frank E. Whiting, a talented architect whose vision captured the community spirit and the profound loss of Mill Hill during the First World War. This memorial stands as a testament to those who fought and paid the ultimate price for freedom. Look at the inscription carved in bronze: “In proud and thankful remembrance of the men from Mill Hill, who died that the nations might henceforth live in freedom, righteousness and peace. They were a wall unto us both by night and by day.” Its words echo the sacrifices made by men like William Henry Abell, a Major in the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment), killed in action on the 23rd of August, 1914. He was one of many locals who perished in the Great War. Some, like John James Alcock, are commemorated in the Tower Hill Memorial, while others, like Ernest Childs, lie in the Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery. On the back of the pylon, you’ll find a second plaque. It remembers those from Mill Hill who died in the Second World War. This memorial is a place of reflection and remembrance. It acknowledges the loss of entire families and the lives that were cut short, but it’s also a place of hope and gratitude for the peace we enjoy today. The Mill Hill War Memorial is more than just a structure. It is the embodiment of a community united in mourning, remembering, and celebrating the courage of those who fought for our freedom.
