Forbidden shores whisper secrets. Mike’s Island. A small jewel in the heart of Minneapolis’ Lake of the Isles. It’s a place you can only admire from afar. Signs clearly state that landing is prohibited. This tiny island and its twin Raspberry Island are protected wildlife refuges. They hold within their lush green embrace the last vestiges of virgin woods. A small piece of wilderness stubbornly clinging to existence in a bustling city.

Mike’s Island isn’t just an island. It’s a relic. A testament to a time before Minneapolis’ explosive growth. Before the dredging transformed the original Wíta Tópa “Four Islands lake” into the Lake of the Isles we know today. Two of the original four islands vanished. Their land now part of the surrounding parkland. Mike’s Island however remains. A silent sentinel guarding the lake’s history.

The creation of Lake of the Isles in the 1880s was a feat of engineering. Peat and silt were dredged from the lake and marsh. This material helped create 36 acres of parkland. This transformation though left its mark. Unstable shorelines and reduced water quality plagued the area. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is currently working on stabilizing shorelines and restoring this beautiful park.

Imagine the Dakota people who once called this area home. They knew the lake as Wíta Tópa. They witnessed the four islands. Long before European settlement. Long before the transformation. Their legacy lives on in the names of these islands. A reminder of a rich history preceding modern development.

Mike’s Island stands as a poignant symbol. It represents a balance between nature and urbanization. A testament to the enduring power of nature’s beauty. Even in the middle of a modern city. It is a place of quiet contemplation. A reminder of the past. A sanctuary for wildlife. It may be forbidden ground. Yet its allure is undeniable. Mike’s Island’s story is written in the untouched woods. A story waiting to be discovered. From a distance. For now.
