Ever wonder what it’s like to ski in Scotland all year round? Here at the Midlothian Snowsports Centre, nestled in the shadow of the Pentland Hills, you can. Formerly known as Hillend Ski Centre, this isn’t your typical winter wonderland. It boasts the second longest dry ski slope in Europe. Midlothian Snowsports Centre is a hub of activity, catering to everyone from beginners to seasoned skiers and snowboarders. The centre is a training ground for future Olympians, and as of 2010, twenty-nine Scottish Olympians, including Finlay Mickel, a former British number one downhill skier, honed their skills on these slopes. Midlothian Snowsports Centre offers a unique skiing experience with its artificial slopes. These slopes, made of special matting, are designed for year-round use. A misting system keeps the surface lubricated for speed and a realistic feel. Two main slopes are served by a chairlift and two button lifts, providing access for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. In addition to the main slopes, the centre also features three nursery slopes, a fun slope, and various freestyle features, offering something for everyone. You can even take lessons. Midlothian Snowsports Centre has seen its share of challenges. In 2010, it faced potential closure due to financial difficulties. However, thanks to the support of the community and a substantial investment from Sportscotland, the centre was saved. More recently, in 2019, Midlothian Council began expanding the site, adding exciting new attractions like a zipline, alpine coaster, and soft play area. Even if you’re not a skier, you can enjoy a ride on the chairlift for breathtaking views of the Pentland Hills. Midlothian Snowsports Centre truly offers a unique blend of sport, leisure, and stunning scenery.
