Midlothian whispers tales of centuries past. Here, in the heart of Scotland, lies a region steeped in history and folklore. Midlothian, once the administrative center of medieval Edinburgh, boasts a unique landmark: the Heart of Midlothian. This heart-shaped mosaic, nestled within the cobblestones of the Royal Mile, marks the spot where the Old Tolbooth once stood. Sir Walter Scott immortalized the Old Tolbooth as the “Heart of Midlothian” in his novel. This building served not only as the administrative center but also as the local jail. Interestingly, the jail wasn’t particularly secure, with frequent escapes. A tradition arose from these escapes: those who broke free would spit on the jail door in defiance. Today, spitting on the heart is considered good luck, although perhaps less so during a pandemic. Midlothian also claims a royal connection. It was here, in Edinburgh Castle, that James VI of Scotland and I of England was born. The difficult birth led to suspicion and the establishment of a rather awkward ritual. To ensure fair play and prevent any substitutions, a government minister had to be present at every subsequent royal birth. This practice continued until Princess Margaret’s birth in 1930. Beyond its historical significance, Midlothian holds literary connections. Sir Walter Scott, author of “The Heart of Midlothian,” also penned “Waverly,” the namesake of Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, the world’s only train station named after a novel. Midlothian, a blend of history, tradition, and literary fame, invites you to step into its rich tapestry.
