The Midland Bank WWI Memorial War memorial stands tall here in Canary Wharf. It’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in the Great War. This memorial is unique because it has a fascinating journey. Originally unveiled in 1921 at the bank’s headquarters in Threadneedle Street, it was later moved to Poultry in 1930. When the Midland Bank became part of HSBC in 1992 and the Threadneedle branch closed, the memorial was moved again, this time to the HSBC HQ in Leadenhall Street. It found its final resting place here in Canary Wharf in 2002. Looking at the memorial, you see two bronze statues flanking a marble panel. One statue is a winged angel with an open book, symbolizing the recording of the names of the fallen. The other is a medieval armored soldier, seemingly mourning the loss of his comrades. The central panel bears the inscription “In Memoriam 1914-1919.” Below this inscription are fourteen panels, each listing the names of the 717 Midland Bank staff who lost their lives during the war. It’s an impressive display of remembrance. You can see the names of those who gave their lives for their country. The Midland Bank WWI Memorial War memorial is a testament to the sacrifices and memories of those who served in the Great War.
