Feel the cool spray of Port Phillip Bay on your face. This is Middle Brighton Beach. A slice of Melbourne’s coastline with a rich history.
For over a century Middle Brighton Beach has been a place of recreation and relaxation. The Middle Brighton Baths opened in 1881. These historic sea baths are unique. They are one of the only remaining caged open water sea baths in Australia. Imagine generations of swimmers enjoying the protected waters.
The beach wasn’t always so accessible. Before the railway arrived many people found Brighton too far to travel. The railway reached Brighton Beach in 1861. This spurred the development of the area. Suddenly the beach was within easy reach of Melburnians. They flocked to the seaside. Captain Kenny’s Brighton Beach Baths opened shortly after the railway. People could change into their bathing costumes in relative privacy. Mixed bathing was forbidden. Separate sections were for men and women. The baths were eventually demolished in 1979. Only the Middle Brighton Municipal Baths remain.
Today Middle Brighton Beach offers more than just swimming. The beach is popular with windsurfers and water skiers. A pedestrian and bicycle path follows the foreshore. Palm trees and gardens line the path. The Middle Brighton Pier leads to a large marina. You can enjoy a stroll along the beach. You might even spot some local wildlife.
Middle Brighton Beach is more than just sand and sea. It is a place where history and leisure meet. It’s a place where you can feel the weight of the past. Yet you can also enjoy a modern seaside experience. It’s a place to relax. It’s a place to remember. It’s a place to enjoy Middle Brighton Beach.
