Envision a rural village slowly awakening, that’s Mickleham. It sits on Melbourne’s northern edge. Mickleham is about 29 km north of Melbourne’s central business district. It’s a suburb within the City of Hume.

The parish name of Mickleham was likely inspired by Mickleham in Surrey, England. This area lies between the Deep and the Merri Creeks.

Mickleham Road and Mount Ridley Road meet here. Mount Ridley is an extinct volcano. Explorers Hume and Hovell used it as a viewing point in 1824.

European settlement began around 1855. A Wesleyan school opened. A government school replaced it in 1871. In 1854, a double fronted building was constructed on Mickleham Road. It became a hotel and a post office. Both the school and the old post office are bluestone. They are on the Register of the National Estate.

Mickleham was an agricultural district. Dairying took place here. It had a church, a post office, and a school until the 1950s.

In 2018, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation covered it. It was called Australia’s fastest growing suburb. The 2021 census recorded a population of 17,452. This is compared to 3,142 at the 2016 census.

T and G Insurance acquired 26 sq km of land east of Mickleham in the early 1980s. It was for development as the Mt Ridley residential township. Blocks were released beginning in 1997. Their areas varied between one and four hectares. They included adjoining parkland and walking trails.

Mickleham Forest Park has native grasses and red gums. It is northwest of the estate.

The Mickleham school has remained open. It had 50 pupils in 1999 and 120 in 2014. The heritage listed Mt Ridley homestead is part of the Hume Anglican Grammar school.

A severe bushfire threatened Mickleham in 2014. It destroyed stock, about 20 homes, and farmland.

In 2022, Darul Ulum Academy opened. It is an Islamic school for primary level education. Secondary level education will come in the future. It is a campus of the biggest Islamic school in Victoria.

Mickleham also hosts the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility. It is the quarantine facility for all animals and plants entering the country. They must be placed in quarantine. The quarantine facility is located on Donnybrook Road near the Hume Freeway.
