Ever wondered where Trudering’s first expansion began? That’s Michaeliburg. This settlement in Munich started in the early 20th century. It marked Trudering’s initial growth southward. Part of it was on Perlach land. Another part was on Trudering land.
Michaeliburg became part of Munich over time. First in 1930 then later in 1932. The name Michaeliburg has an interesting origin. It comes from Michael Obermeyer. He built a tavern here in 1898. The tavern looked like a castle because of its towers. People started calling it Michaeliburg and the name stuck.
Sadly the original Michaeliburg building is no more. In summer 2009 it was torn down. Now residential buildings stand where the tavern once did.
But Michaeliburg has more to offer. Since 1900 a chapel has existed here. It is dedicated to St Michael. It is known as the Michaelikapelle. Each year on Volkstrauertag local clubs gather. They remember war victims. They honor those lost in conflicts.
Look around and spot some unique architecture. Notice the double house on Bajuwarenstraße. Check out the older villa on Hinterrißstraße. These buildings show Michaeliburg’s diverse styles.
The spirit of Michaeliburg lives on in its associations. The fire brigade has friends here since 1920. The Kapellenfreunde care for the chapel. The Siedlervereinigung brings residents together.
Michaeliburg may have changed but its history remains. It is a place with a story. A story of growth a tavern and a community. It is a unique part of Munich.
