In the heart of Munich, nestled among bustling streets, stands the Michael Strich Stele. This unassuming monument serves as a poignant reminder of a life tragically cut short during the horrors of the Holocaust. Michael Strich, born in 1881, was a respected historian who made Munich his home. He dedicated his life to unraveling the complexities of the past, leaving his mark on academia with acclaimed works like “Liselotte and Ludwig XIV” and “The Kurhaus Bayern in the Age of Ludwig XIV and the European Powers.” Despite converting to Catholicism and marrying a Catholic woman, Strich’s Jewish heritage made him a target during the rise of Nazi Germany. In 1939, his home at Clemensstraße 41 was cruelly seized from him, a cruel prelude to the tragedy that awaited. On November 20, 1941, Michael Strich was forcibly deported to Kaunas, Lithuania. He was tragically murdered there just days later. The Michael Strich Stele, erected in 2019, stands as a testament to his life and the countless others lost during the Holocaust. It is a solemn call to remember, to learn from the past, and to fight against intolerance in all its forms.
