Ever wondered where Ghana’s first tarred road lies? That’s just one piece of Mfantsiman Municipal District’s story. We are standing at the heart of a district with a rich history. Mfantsiman Municipal District is one of the twenty-two districts in the Central Region of Ghana. It began as Mfantsiman District in 1988. In 2008, it became Mfantsiman Municipal District.
But its story goes back further. Saltpond, the capital of Mfantsiman Municipal District, is where the Convention People’s Party was born. Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah founded this party. Nkrumah planted a palm tree here. It symbolized the birth of the UGCC. You can still find that palm tree in the center of Saltpond.
This municipality stretches along the Atlantic coastline. It covers about 612 square kilometers. Mfantsiman shares borders with several districts. Gomoa West is to the east. Ekumfi District is to the west. Ajumaku Enyan Essiam District sits to the north. The Gulf of Guinea is to the south.
The 2021 census counted about 168905 people in Mfantsiman Municipal District. There were 78033 males and 90872 females. Fishing, farming, and trading drive the local economy. You will see many people engaged in these activities.
Mfantsiman Municipal District offers more than just history and economy. It has tourist potential too. Fort Amsterdam and Fort William are historical monuments worth visiting. Beaches in Saltpond and Anomabo offer relaxation.
Mankessim serves as a significant market center. Trade and commerce thrive here. You can find diverse products and experience the local trading culture. Agriculture is very important here. Farmers grow cocoa, oil palm, and pineapples. They also cultivate oranges, plantain, maize, and cassava. Fishing dominates the coastal towns and villages.
Mfantsiman also boasts many educational facilities. There are public and private schools. Biriwa NVTI provides vocational training. The people here are mostly Akan. Other ethnic groups have also migrated here. They celebrate festivals like Odambea and Ahobaa. These festivals showcase their rich cultural heritage.
Offshore oil drilling began here for the first time in Ghana. Mfantsiman is also home to the Akanland Ceramics factory. Though now a paper-producing company, it marks a piece of industrial history.
Many notable people come from Mfantsiman Municipality. Prof Francis Allotey and Dr James Kwegyir Aggrey are among them. Sir Kobina Arku Korsah and Ama Ata Aidoo also hail from here.
