Did the stones of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church ever whisper secrets of a different faith? Originally, this grand structure at 2151 West Washington Boulevard wasn’t a Baptist church at all. It was built in 1901 as the Third Church of Christ, Scientist. Architect Hugh M.G. Garden designed this unique building, blending classical and modern elements. His distinctive ornamental style, known as “Gardenesque,” graces the entire church. The design was a conscious departure from traditional church architecture, reflecting the then-new Christian Science movement. Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church acquired this architectural gem in 1947. It became a cornerstone of the community. The church’s significance was captured in 1953 by photographer Gordon Parks. He documented the church’s role as “a temple of hope” for Chicago’s Black community. His photos and unpublished story for Life magazine highlighted Reverend Ernest Franklin Ledbetter’s compassionate leadership. Ledbetter’s outreach and support resonated deeply within the community. The Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to the evolving spirit of faith in Chicago. The building itself echoes this transformation, moving from one belief system to another, its stones holding the stories of both. Today, it continues to serve as a beacon of hope and resilience on West Washington Boulevard.
