1891. A lone student sits in a rented shophouse on Carnarvon Street. This humble beginning marks the birth of the Methodist Boys’ School, then known as the Anglo-Chinese School. Reverend B.H. Balderstone, a Methodist missionary from Canada, had a vision. He wanted to establish a Methodist school in Penang. This vision started with just one student. The Methodist Boys’ School is the oldest Methodist school in Malaysia. Its story is a testament to perseverance and growth. Rev. Balderstone’s failing eyesight forced him to retire in 1892. Rev. G.F. Pykett took the helm, leading the school for the next forty years. He is credited with the school’s significant expansion and success. The school outgrew the single shophouse and expanded to occupy five adjoining houses on Carnavon Street. Then, they moved to a modern building on Maxwell Road, thanks to donations from local philanthropists. The school continued to thrive, even renting additional shophouses along Penang Road to accommodate the growing student population. The school’s history is intertwined with Suffolk House, a mansion once used by British Governors. Rev. Peach, a later principal, purchased Suffolk House and its adjacent land in 1929 for $40,000 Straits dollars. He intended to build new school premises there. The Great Depression delayed these plans, but the land was eventually used for the current Methodist Boys’ School building. In 1955, the new premises on Air Itam Road were finally completed, incorporating Suffolk House. The school, now known as Methodist Boys’ School, was officially opened by Malcolm McDonald, the British Commissioner-General for South-East Asia. Even Suffolk House played a role, serving as the school canteen until 1975. The Methodist Boys’ School continued to evolve, adding buildings and facilities over the decades. It stands today as a testament to its founders’ vision and the dedication of countless teachers and students. The school’s motto, “Whatsoever Things Are True,” reflects its commitment to a holistic education. As you stand before Methodist Boys’ School, remember its humble beginnings. From a single student in a shophouse to a renowned institution, its story inspires.
