This unassuming complex in Kassel, nestled in the Bettenhausen district, holds a legacy far grander than its exterior suggests. The Messinghof stands as the oldest industrial monument in Northern Hesse, a testament to Kassel’s rich manufacturing heritage. Within its walls, the Augsburg goldsmith Johann Jacob Anthoni crafted the copper plates for this monumental figure in the early 18th century. Landgrave Karl granted it a monopoly on copper processing in 1681, boosting the local economy and creating jobs. This move fueled the industrialization of Hesse-Kassel and established the Messinghof as the cradle of Kassel’s metal industry. The Messinghof endured through wars and changing ownership, eventually becoming a private enterprise in 1869. While the ravages of World War II claimed the Hammerflügel, the Gießereiflügel with its iconic chimney and smelting furnaces still stands. Today, after years of neglect and restoration, the Messinghof has found new life. Now, instead of metal, it shapes experiences, hosting events, and showcasing a collection of vintage cars.
