Was this entire church built in just one year? Many visitors ask this question when they stand before Messiah Lutheran Church. They are astonished when I say “No”. While it’s true that the dedication of the church building happened on Pentecost Sunday, May 28th, 1950, the laying of the cornerstone took place a whole year earlier. On Pentecost Sunday, June 5th, 1949, the church held a special celebration for their current building We are standing in front of today. The roots of Messiah Lutheran Church actually go back much further. The church congregation was founded in 1925. That’s almost a century of faith and community! Reverend Theodore L. Blanken was the first pastor called to lead the growing congregation. In a testament to the community’s dedication, a mere year later in 1926, both the chapel and the school were dedicated. That’s right, Messiah Lutheran Church has always valued both faith and education. Over the years, Messiah Lutheran Church has been served by many dedicated pastors. Each pastor has left their own unique mark. However, there’s one who holds a special place in the hearts of the congregation: Reverend Franklin C. Giese. He succeeded Rev. Blanken in 1937 and went on to serve Messiah Lutheran Church for over 40 years! Imagine that – 40 years of sermons, guidance, and community service! Today, Messiah Lutheran Church continues to be a beacon of faith and community in Chicago.
