From humble beginnings in a small shopping center space Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This church started with just five African American families. They met at Town East Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr Jim Byrd. Rev Terry M Turner received the call to lead this new congregation. After months of planning and prayer their first service was held on May 8 1991. Twenty-one believers gathered in a 700-square-foot space at LaPrada and John West in Dallas. Imagine the excitement and hope those twenty-one pioneers felt.
Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church wasn’t just about a building. It was about a growing community. The church quickly outgrew its initial space. They expanded by 700 square feet within the first year. Their growth continued. They needed a larger facility. They found a 4500-square-foot building on Franklin Drive in Mesquite. It needed significant renovations. The City of Mesquite allowed them to move in. They had to make it code compliant within a year. This began years of construction projects. Their first service in this new building was August 2 1992. After leasing for six months they purchased the property.
On January 27 1994 Mesquite Friendship became an independent Southern Baptist Church. The church continued its remarkable growth. Between 1995 and 1997 they completed several renovation and expansion projects. They purchased neighboring land. They added an 870-square-foot wing and a 6283-square-foot sanctuary. By 2001 their growth was so significant they purchased 6.8 acres of land on East US Highway 80. Their dedication and hard work culminated in their current 45500-square-foot worship center. They moved into it on December 31 2007. More land acquisitions followed. They now boast a thriving membership of over 1500 and more than 40 ministries.
In June 2023 Rev Caleb M Turner officially succeeded his father Dr Terry M Turner. Dr Turner became Pastor Emeritus. The legacy of Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church is one of unwavering faith perseverance and incredible community spirit. This church is more than just a building. Their journey from a small group to a large thriving congregation shows the impact of dedication and a shared vision.
