Remember when churches served as the very bedrock of a community? Let’s step back in time and uncover the story of Mesquite Church of Christ. This church started its journey in 1940. The first gathering took place at the Skillman Avenue Church in Dallas. Back then it was known as the Sears and Summit Streets church.
Officially, Mesquite Church of Christ incorporated on September 1st, 1940. It began with just 12 devoted members. For the first year they met at the Primitive Baptist Church. It was located north of the railroad on McKinney and Lane Streets. The congregation then moved to the W.O.W. hall in Mesquite for another year.
A pivotal moment arrived on August 30th, 1942. The church held its first service in a new building. It was built on Lots 1 and 2 of Block B of the J.M. Porter Addition. At that time it was under the name of the College and Locust St Church of Christ.
Over the years, the Mesquite Church of Christ underwent major auditorium renovations. These occurred on February 15th, 1953; February 4th, 1955; February 11th, 1961; and November 1969. An education building was added in 1943. In 1985, a new education building was dedicated. Around this time, the congregation officially changed its name to Mesquite Church of Christ.
During the construction phase, the church acquired properties surrounding the original lots. These purchased lots now form the north and south parking lots of the campus. More recently, the Mesquite Church of Christ renovated its Educational Building. This greatly improved the effectiveness of the Children’s Ministry classrooms.
In its early days, several part-time preachers assisted. They included W.T. Hamilton and C.C. Bankhead. Others were L.H. Mathis, D.L. Freeman, and T.J. Moon. Paul O. Ray and H.D. Smith also ministered.
Mesquite Church of Christ has been serving the Lord in Mesquite for many years. It is a congregation that cherishes the love and unity found in God’s family. They spread the Word of the Lord locally and globally.
Mesquite Church of Christ also confirms scriptural practices. They believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It serves as the foundation for their lives, worship, and teaching. The Elders are the final interpretive authority on the Bible’s application for the church.
The church offers various services. There are Bible classes for all ages. Worship services are held in both English and Spanish. They also provide an after-school program called Kid’s Beach Club. Here children receive Bibles on “Great Treasure Day”.
