Commissioned by a grand vizier this mosque carries whispers of power. Welcome to the Mesih Ali Paşa Camii. It is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque. It is located in Istanbul’s Fatih district. This mosque tells a story of ambition and architectural brilliance.

Mesih Mehmed Pasha commissioned the mosque in 1584. At the time he was the third vizier under Murad III. Before returning to Istanbul in 1581, he had served as governor-general of Egypt for almost six years in Cairo. His rise was rapid. He became second vizier in July 1584. Then he became grand vizier for a short time. That was from December 1585 to April 1586. Fate is sometimes cruel. He died in 1589 and was buried near his mosque.

Mesih Ali Paşa Camii is also known as Mesih Mehmed Pasha Mosque. The mosque’s design is a point of historical debate. Mimar Sinan included the mosque in his autobiography. He later omitted it. Some historians believe Sinan’s involvement was limited. Sinan went on a hajj to Mecca in 1584. Mehmed Subaşı took his place. He was the royal architect. The mosque’s foundation inscription gives the completion date. It was AH 994 or 1585-86.

The triple water fountain has the same date. It is on the southwest corner of the perimeter wall. This fountain was refurbished in 1817-18. Mesih Pasha secured permission to be buried next to his mosque in 1587. His wish was granted after his death in 1589.

The Mesih Ali Paşa Camii is built on a sloping site. The eastern side is higher than the western. A vaulted substructure supports the western side. This creates a level surface. Shops occupy this substructure. North of the mosque is a rectangular forecourt. An arcade with pillars surrounds it on three sides. Small domes top the pillars. A domed gatehouse provides entrance from the street. Instead of a fountain, Mesih Pasha’s grave is in the forecourt center.

The mosque’s north facade has a double portico with five arches. The columns of the inner portico support five small domes. Ritual ablutions take place beneath the arcade’s northern section. There are a series of taps instead of a fountain. The main dome is lead-covered. It is 12.8 meters in diameter. The dome rests on a drum with 24 windows. Eight stabilizing turrets encircle the drum. These turrets sit on the internal piers. Five half-domes form the mihrab’s exedra. They also form the exedras at the four corners. Aisles flank the mosque. Three small domes cover each side. Large framing arches group the lower-level windows.

The Mesih Ali Paşa Camii stands as a testament to Ottoman architecture. Its history reflects ambition patronage and the genius of Mimar Sinan. Take a moment to appreciate the architectural achievement. The mosque is an enduring symbol of Istanbul’s rich heritage.
