Whispers of forgotten prayers still echo within the Manastır Mescidi. This unassuming structure, nestled within Istanbul’s bustling Fatih district, holds a history far richer than its modest exterior suggests. The Manastır Mescidi, also known as Mustafa Çavuş Mescidi, stands as a testament to the city’s layered past. It began as an Eastern Orthodox church. The Ottomans later converted it into a small mosque, a mescit. Its original dedication remains a mystery. Neither archaeological digs nor medieval texts offer a definitive answer. One theory suggests it belonged to a Byzantine monastery. This monastery was dedicated to the Holy Martyrs Menodora, Metrodora, and Nymphodora. Another theory links it to the nunnery of Kyra Martha. Kyra Martha was founded in 1268 by Maria, sister of Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos.

The Manastır Mescidi sits on Istanbul’s seventh hill, near the Topkapı Gate. This location places it near the historic neighborhood once called ta Elebichou. In the 14th century, Phokas Maroulas, a domestikos of the imperial table, restored the church. He dedicated it to the Theotokos and founded a small monastery there. After the fall of Constantinople, Sultan Mehmed II’s page, Mustafa, converted the building into a mescit. During the mid-20th century, surrounding buildings were demolished to make way for Turgut Özal Caddesi. This effectively ended its use as a place of worship. The Manastır Mescidi is now part of a wall protecting a bus garage. Accessing it requires special permission from the bus company.

The Manastır Mescidi is small. It’s more of an oratory than a grand church. It has a single nave, three projecting apses to the east, and a narthex to the west. Most of the interior decoration is lost. Only two hammered carved capitals remain from the triple arcade between the narthex and the naos. The roof and windows have been altered over time. Excavations in the 1960s revealed a more complex original plan. The church originally had three naves, possibly with a dome, and a tripartite bema. There was also an exonarthex with a vault and a small chapel with esonarthexes. The Manastır Mescidi’s masonry and plan suggest a late 11th-century origin. However, some scholars believe the brickwork could date to the Palaiologan era (13th-15th centuries). The Manastır Mescidi is a hidden gem. It whispers stories of emperors and sultans, of faith and transformation. It’s a poignant reminder of Constantinople’s rich and complex history.
