Merrimu

Merrimu. A place whispered on the winds of change. A vast canvas of 1,016 hectares, northeast of Bacchus Marsh. Merrimu sits on an elevated plateau, a stage set with rolling hills. Its views stretch down to Bacchus Marsh itself. Today, Merrimu is largely agricultural land, punctuated by nature reserves and rural homes. The land is bordered by the Long Forest Reserve to the east and sand quarries to the west. But Merrimu is poised for transformation. The Victorian Planning Authority, in collaboration with the Moorabool Shire Council, is crafting a future for Merrimu. This future is embodied in the Merrimu Precinct Structure Plan. This plan envisions a vibrant community. It includes housing, education facilities, and a retail centre humming with local employment opportunities. Parks will offer green spaces. Roads will connect the community. A drainage network will support its growth. The Bacchus Marsh Eastern Link Road, a future arterial road, is planned to traverse Merrimu. This road will connect Bences and Gisborne Roads. Additionally, the Western Renewables Link, carrying renewable energy from Bulgana to Sydenham, is proposed to run through the precinct. Merrimu isn’t just about buildings and roads. It’s about anticipating the needs of a growing population. It’s about providing housing and essential infrastructure. The Development Contributions Plan works in concert with the Precinct Structure Plan. It sets out the costs of crucial infrastructure. This includes intersections, drainage corridors, and retarding basins. A levy on new development will help fund these improvements, ensuring that Merrimu’s growth is sustainable and doesn’t overburden existing resources. Merrimu is a story still being written.
