Gone but not forgotten. That is the story of the Mérnök Utcai Általános Iskola. From 1967 to 2008 the Mérnök Utcai Általános Iskola stood here. Now, let’s delve into the history of this place.
The Mérnök Utcai Általános Iskola is no more. In its place stands the new building of Gábor Dénes College. It was built by September 2009. Yet the memories of the school linger on.
The school had a great reputation. Many students enjoyed their time here. It was seen as unwarranted to close a school in the middle of a housing estate. They did not see child deficiency as a reason.
The Mérnök Utcai Általános Iskola had more students. It had more than prescribed by the maintaining local government. The school was famous nationwide. This was because of its induction program for first-graders. The teachers here developed this program.
Several teachers created a textbook in 1993. Zsoltné Kapuvári Jolán, Jusztin Katalin, and Orosz Andrásné were among them. INTEGRA publishing house released it. Some students came from Keveháza and Sopron. They came because this was a better school. Some even traveled from Budafok every day.
The municipality sold the land to Gábor Dénes College. Molnár Gyula the mayor and his team did this. They sold it despite the school’s success. Some believe the representatives were bought.
The demolition was quick. One person watched from their window. They saw an excavator tear down the whole school in half a day. The sounds of children were replaced by silence. Only the kindergarten remained.
Before its demolition a work of art stood there. It stood in front of the former elementary school. Before the school’s demolition they moved it. It was moved to the Leiningen street school building.
Even though the Mérnök Utcai Általános Iskola is gone it lives on. Former teachers and students erected a memorial stone in 2015. It commemorates the school. The inscription reads that the school was here from 1967 to 2007. It mentions the open and loving atmosphere. It says that the beautiful days spent there are forever etched in their hearts. The stone ensures that the Mérnök Utcai Általános Iskola is not forgotten.
