Have you ever imagined a town named after a young girl? You are standing in the heart of Mernda, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. This town’s name, an Aboriginal word, means “young girl” in Woiwurrung, the local language of the Wurundjeri people. While today it is known for its modern shopping centres and new housing estates, Mernda’s history is much deeper and richer. Before the European settlers arrived, the land was home to the Wurundjeri people. They lived off the land, hunting, fishing, and gathering food. When European settlers arrived in the 1800s, they built a bridge over the Plenty River, and a small community grew up around it. The Bridge Inn was the centre of this early Mernda.
This humble inn played a vital role in the history of the area. It attracted settlers, giving them a place to rest and replenish their supplies. It became a bustling hub, where farmers would gather to trade and socialize. In the 1850s, the construction of the Yan Yean Reservoir brought a wave of workers and tourists, who saw the opportunities that the water source presented. They brought a boost to the town, but the location of the reservoir in the region led to a name change. Initially, Mernda was known as Morang, then as South Yan Yean to differentiate it from the Yan Yean Reservoir and picnic grounds. But in 1913, the town finally received its current name, Mernda, and retained it to this day. Over the decades, Mernda has seen its share of change. Dairy farms, livestock saleyards, and even a mechanics’ institute once thrived here. This beautiful town, now a vibrant suburb, blends historic charm with modern amenities. It is a quiet space between bustling Melbourne and the vast wilderness of the Plenty Gorge, where you can still see evidence of its rich history. Imagine what these streets must have looked like a century ago, and now, take a moment to feel the history of this fascinating place.
