Can a creature breathe magic into a city? Look around. Here at Merlion Park, you’re facing the very symbol of Singapore, the Merlion. This isn’t just a statue. It’s a story, a legend, and a testament to Singapore’s journey. The Merlion, with its lion’s head and fish’s body, stands proudly. It embodies the spirit of this island nation. The Merlion’s name itself is a fusion of “mer,” meaning sea, and “lion.” This powerful combination represents Singapore’s history and transformation.

The Merlion’s fish tail symbolizes Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village called Temasek. “Temasek” means “sea town” in Javanese. The lion head pays tribute to the legend of Sang Nila Utama, a prince who rediscovered the island and named it Singapura, or “lion city.” This mythical creature was designed by Alec Fraser-Brunner for the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) back in 1964. Since then, the Merlion has become a globally recognized symbol of Singapore. The STB holds the trademark, ensuring its image represents the nation’s best.

The current Merlion statue wasn’t always here at Merlion Park. The original statue was installed at the mouth of the Singapore River in 1972. It took sculptor Lim Nang Seng, along with his eight children, almost a year to complete the 8.6-meter-tall, 70-ton masterpiece. The construction of the water spouting mechanism of the statue was supervised by Stanley Mok. However, with the construction of the Esplanade Bridge, the Merlion’s view, and the public’s view of it, became obstructed. In 2002, the Merlion embarked on a remarkable journey across the water to its current home. This new location offers breathtaking views of Marina Bay. It even survived a lightning strike in 2009. The Merlion stands tall, a silent witness to Singapore’s continued transformation.

The Merlion is more than a tourist attraction. It’s a national icon that reflects Singapore’s rich history, vibrant culture, and its evolution. So, as you gaze upon this magnificent creature, remember the story it tells. It’s the story of Singapore, a small island nation that roared its way onto the world stage.
