Steel bones and glass skin. That’s the first impression of Istanbul Technical University’s Central Classroom Building. This architectural marvel isn’t just a place for lectures. It’s a vibrant hub a testament to ingenuity.
The Merkezi Derslik Binası stands proudly at the heart of the Ayazağa campus. Designed by Professors Hasan Şener and Ahsen Özsoy it opened in 2011. Its creation was driven by a pressing need. The university’s student population had grown significantly. Existing facilities couldn’t cope with the demand for shared lecture halls. The building’s construction was included in the 2009/2010 investment plan. This addressed the urgent need for ample lecture halls seminar rooms and computer labs.
The Merkezi Derslik Binası boasts a remarkable design. Its steel structure was chosen for its speed of construction flexibility and earthquake resistance. It offers vast open spaces. Floor heights are 3.6 meters except for the ground floor which reaches 4 meters. This houses student relaxation areas and a cafeteria.
The building’s impressive facade deserves special attention. It features a double-skin system. The south facade and parts of the east and west are double-skinned. This design is predicted to save energy. The exterior uses aluminum composite panels and perforated metal panels. These movable panels can be adjusted for climate control and sunlight management. This sophisticated system offers an intriguing interplay of light and shadow.
The building’s interior is carefully planned. Amphitheaters of varying sizes and capacities are strategically positioned. Seminar rooms and offices are separated by clear circulation and service zones. Twelve amphitheaters serve approximately 1700 students. The steel structure allows for large open spaces in the amphitheaters. Double-height amphitheaters are on the first and second floors. Offices seminar rooms and faculty offices are on the mezzanine floors.
The ground floor is the building’s social heart. It provides a spacious open area that flows seamlessly into a large green space. Students frequently gather there. This was a deliberate design choice. The campus lacked sufficient communal areas. This building addresses that deficiency. The Merkezi Derslik Binası is a successful example of thoughtful design. It has become an indispensable part of the Istanbul Technical University campus.
