In 1944, the final touches were put on Building 9 at the Naval Air Station Sand Point, now known as Mercy Magnuson Place. It was a bustling hub for over 500 Navy squadron members. Imagine the sounds of their boots echoing through the halls, the clatter of mess hall trays, and the constant hum of activity. Mercy Magnuson Place stands as a testament to a rich and layered past. For decades, it served as a barracks, a crucial part of the naval station. The building’s history is deeply intertwined with the history of Seattle itself, playing a vital role during World War II. After the base’s closure in 1991, the once-vibrant building fell into disrepair. It became a shadow of its former self, attracting illegal activity and posing safety concerns for the surrounding community. But hope was not lost. Mercy Housing Northwest stepped in with a vision for transformation. They saw the potential to breathe new life into this historic structure. Through a complex partnership, involving Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits and Low Income Housing Tax Credits, they secured the funding for a massive revitalization project. The renovation of Mercy Magnuson Place was no small feat. The 250,000 square foot building required extensive work, including seismic upgrades, new roofing, and window replacements. The interior was completely reimagined to create 148 affordable apartment homes. More than half of these units are designed for families, with two or three bedrooms. Today, Mercy Magnuson Place is more than just housing. It’s a vibrant community hub that includes a six-classroom childcare center, a neighborhood health clinic, and a beautifully restored solarium that serves as a community room. Residents have access to a range of services, from after-school programs for children to health and wellness workshops. The location within Magnuson Park offers further benefits. Residents are steps away from a community center, vast recreational spaces, and excellent neighborhood schools. Public transportation provides easy access to the wider city. Mercy Magnuson Place is a story of renewal and community. It’s a reminder that even in the face of decay and decline, hope can prevail, transforming a once-forgotten space into a place where families can thrive.
