How would you like to find a serene spiritual retreat near the seaside? Welcome to the Meow Heong Lim Temple in Penang. The Meow Heong Lim Temple offers a peaceful escape with stunning ocean views.

This Buddhist temple is also a columbarium. It stands along Hill Railway Road in Air Itam. The Meow Heong Lim Temple is located midway to Penang Hill Railway Station.

Lim Bing Zhao and Lim Bing Kun established the Meow Heong Lim Temple. They wanted a place for Master Hui Quan to stay and preach. Master Hui Quan arrived in Penang in 1940. He then passed away in 1943.

Master Hui Quan was born in Fujian Province in 1875. He became a monk at age 19 after losing both parents. He traveled throughout China to preach and learn. Master Hui Quan became a Buddhist authority in Xiamen. He was one of the three great Buddhist masters there.

In 1938, Xiamen fell to the Japanese. Master Hui Quan fled to Southeast Asia. He arrived in Penang in 1940. He decided to stay due to the fine weather and hospitality. Initially, he stayed at the Jade Emperor Pavilion. The Lim brothers then built him a home.

Master Hui Quan passed away in 1943. He had spent fifty years as a monk. His relics are kept at Wan Shi Yan in Xiamen. They are also at the Hui Quan Memorial at Meow Heong Lim Temple here in Penang.

During Cheng Meng, the temple becomes very busy. People chant, pray and burn incense. They also burn joss papers. Joss paper is ghost money. It provides good things for the deceased in the afterlife.

K.K.’s mother, grandmother, and two aunts remain here. K.K. and his partner also purchased their final resting places here in 2015.

Visitors can admire the temple’s intricate architecture. Vibrant decorations reflect traditional Chinese craftsmanship. The gentle sea breeze adds tranquility. The sound of waves makes it perfect for meditation. The grounds are well-maintained. Beautiful gardens and pathways invite leisurely strolls.

Whether seeking spiritual solace or enjoying the scenery, Meow Heong Lim Temple is a must-visit. Remember Master Hui Quan and the Lim brothers as you explore this serene place. Their dedication created this peaceful haven for all.
