Today, it caters to over 2,000 students from early learning all the way up to Year 12. It’s a co-educational institution. However, it follows a unique “Together-Apart-Together” model. Students learn together in co-ed classes from early learning to Year 4, and again from Years 10 to 12. During the crucial middle years, from 5 to 9, they separate into single-gender classes. In 2023, Brenton Sanderson, a former AFL player and coach, joined as Director of Sport. He’s helping to shape the next generation of athletes. The girls participate in a combined AGSV and Associated Public Schools (APS) competition. Mentone Grammar School has an impressive record in both competitions, with numerous premierships across a variety of sports. A fun fact: in 2022, Evie Stansby, the Head Prefect, broke new ground. She became the first female student to earn a place on the First XI cricket team. Mentone Grammar School also boasts a proud military tradition through its Cadet Unit (MGACU). Established in 1943, it’s the largest school-based unit in Victoria and part of the 31st Battalion (Melbourne Schools). It instils leadership skills and practical expertise in fieldcraft, first aid, and navigation. Every Year 9 student participates for a year, with the option to continue.
