Have you ever wondered what a “church with the sign” could possibly mean? Well, here we are, standing directly in front of Mentone Baptist Church, a building that’s known for its prominent sign, a testament to its unwavering faith and long-standing legacy. Mentone Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a community hub with a rich history rooted in the heart of Mentone. Back in 1945, a group of people in the area had a vision to establish a Baptist church. The dream didn’t materialize until 1950, when a dedicated group of 10 individuals, including Reg and Ruby Ward, Jim and Grace Sutherland, commenced their journey towards fulfilling this vision. Their first meeting took place in a home on Nepean Highway, marking the beginning of what is now known as Mentone Baptist Church. They searched for a property, a place to call their own, and finally purchased a site on the corner of Warrigal Road and Harpley Street in 1952. This is the exact spot where we are right now. The church building opened its doors on November 1, 1953, and the first members meeting was held on the 19th of the same month. After the first ten years, Mentone had grown to 60 members and continued to expand. Mentone Baptist Church celebrated its 70th anniversary just last year, a monumental celebration demonstrating the church’s enduring commitment to its community. They celebrated with a thanksgiving service, a testament to their enduring faith. Over the years, Mentone Baptist Church has witnessed numerous milestones, from its beginnings in a humble home to the construction of its current auditorium in 1968. The church building has undergone renovations, but its mission has remained steadfast. Despite the challenges and changes that have come with time, Mentone Baptist Church continues to strive for growth and to spread the message of Jesus Christ.
