Amidst the urban sprawl of Jakarta, Menteng whispers tales of a bygone era. Menteng’s story began in the early 1910s. It was envisioned as a tranquil garden suburb, a stark contrast to the bustling city of Batavia. Designed for the Dutch elite and high officials, Menteng showcased wide boulevards, concentric streets, and lush green spaces. Menteng was the brainchild of P.A.J. Moojen and F.J. Kubatz. It stands as Jakarta’s first modern housing estate. The Menteng Project, as it was known, became a symbol of ambition and innovation in urban planning between 1910 and 1939. The area was originally a collection of private estates. From rice paddies and coconut plantations, it transformed into a sophisticated residential haven. Moojen’s initial design drew inspiration from Ebenezer Howard’s garden city model. But Menteng was designed not in isolation, but as an integrated part of the expanding city. Architects like Ghijsels left their mark, designing elegant Indies-style houses, St. Paul’s Church, and the Logegebouw, now home to Indonesia’s national development planning board. Even during the Great Depression, Menteng continued to evolve. Two-story houses, inspired by Moojen’s earlier work, sprang up along boulevards like Jalan Imam Bonjol and Jalan Diponegoro. After Indonesia’s independence, Menteng transitioned. Its prestige shifted to the local elite. While commercial pressures mounted, a 1975 decree declared Menteng a cultural heritage area. This decree recognized its unique architecture, high-sloping roofs, and spacious gardens. The spirit of Menteng lives on. From former President Obama, who spent part of his childhood here, to former Indonesian presidents Suharto and Megawati Soekarnoputri, Menteng has housed influential figures. It is a testament to its enduring allure. As you stroll through Menteng today, imagine the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages. Picture elegant residents enjoying leisurely afternoons in the shade of Taman Suropati. The echoes of history linger in every corner of Menteng. This district invites you to step back in time and experience the charm of Jakarta’s first garden suburb.
