Across the span of Mendiola Street, the Mendiola Peace Arch stands as a silent sentinel. It whispers tales of both turmoil and hope. Mendiola Street, named after the influential educator Enrique Mendiola, has long been the stage for the Filipino people’s struggles and triumphs. This street, leading to the Malacañang Palace, has echoed with the voices of protesters throughout history. In 1970, during the First Quarter Storm, Mendiola Street witnessed the “Battle of Malacañang.” Student demonstrators clashed with police forces, resulting in the tragic deaths of four students and two bystanders. The air was thick with tear gas and the cries of the injured. The echoes of this event still linger in the shadows of the Peace Arch. Years later, in 1987, another tragic chapter unfolded on Mendiola Street. Thousands of peasant farmers marched, demanding land reform from President Corazon Aquino. The protest ended in bloodshed. Thirteen protesters lost their lives, in what became known as the Mendiola Massacre. The Mendiola Peace Arch, inaugurated in 2010, stands as a testament to these struggles. It serves as a reminder of the fight for justice and equality that has taken place on this very ground. The arch represents the hope for a future where voices are heard peacefully.
