A grand legacy in stone and water. The Mendebrunnen at Augustusplatz whispers tales of a bygone era. The Mendebrunnen, Leipzig’s largest fountain, was completed in 1886. It was a gift from Pauline Mende, a merchant’s widow, whose generosity exceeded the initial cost of 189,000 gold marks. The fountain’s name honors her contribution. The Mendebrunnen’s creation involved a collaboration of artists. Adolf Gnauth designed the fountain, while Jacob Ungerer sculpted the figures. Hugo Licht, Leipzig’s building director, oversaw the project after Gnauth’s passing. The Mendebrunnen isn’t just a beautiful display of water. It’s an allegory of water’s vital role in human life. Triton, son of Poseidon, appears twice, each wielding a conch shell, symbolizing man’s control over the sea’s power. Nereids adorn the obelisk, representing the benefits humans derive from the sea. Look closely. The design echoes the grandeur of Italian Baroque fountains. You’ll see similarities to Rome’s Fontana del Moro, the Four Rivers Fountain, and even the Trevi Fountain. The maritime theme extends to hippocampi, mythical half-horse, half-fish creatures, further emphasizing water’s importance. The Mendebrunnen has witnessed the changing face of Augustusplatz. It stood amidst the Paulinerkirche, Augusteum, and Neues Theater. It survived the devastating bombing of December 1943, a testament to its resilience.
