In 1998, a unique skyscraper pierced Penang’s skyline: Menara JKP. Originally named Menara UMNO, this 21-storey building at the corner of Macalister Road and Jalan Zainul Abidin stands as a testament to innovative architecture. Menara JKP isn’t just another tall building. It’s 93.6 meters of architectural ingenuity, designed by Kenneth Yeang. The building showcases a pioneering wing wall system. These walls, strategically placed, capture the prevailing winds. Adjustable windows and balcony doors further control airflow, creating a naturally ventilated environment. Menara JKP’s innovative design makes it a significant landmark in Penang. However, the building’s history also holds moments of tragedy. In June 2013, a violent thunderstorm struck George Town. A lightning arrestor atop Menara JKP was dislodged. It plummeted to Macalister Road below, tragically killing two people. One was a local hawker, Lim Chin Aik, whose car was crushed by the impact. The other victim was Jahir Hussain Sulaiman, a lorry attendant. The incident highlighted the power of nature and the importance of structural safety. Despite this tragedy, Menara JKP continues to be a prominent feature of Penang’s cityscape. The building was originally owned by UMNO. It later changed hands and was renamed Menara JKP, after its current owner, JKP Sdn Bhd. This company is the development arm of the Penang Bumiputra Development Council. Today, Menara JKP stands as a reminder of Penang’s innovative spirit, its resilience, and its rich history.
