What comes to mind when you think of a mussel? A simple shellfish, right? But here at the Memory and Reflection Sculpture, that humble mussel takes on a whole new meaning. Installed in 2018, this large, reflective silver mussel isn’t just a tribute to the town’s name, Musselburgh, which literally means “town of mussels”. It’s a testament to the town’s rich history, etched onto the very barnacles of the sculpture. Look closely, and you’ll see symbols depicting everything from the Roman occupation to the historic Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, all woven into the mussel’s shell. Even the base tells a story. Notice the engravings? Those were designed by local schoolchildren and depict scenes of everyday life in Musselburgh, alongside the region’s unique flora and fauna. The Memory and Reflection Sculpture invites you to do just that: reflect. Reflect on the town’s past, its people, and even your own connection to this place.
