How sturdy Melville’s Monument appears! This grand column in St Andrew Square dominates the skyline. Melville’s Monument stands as a tribute to the controversial figure of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. A powerful force in late 18th-century British politics, Dundas was admired by some and reviled by others.

The monument, designed by William Burn, draws inspiration from Trajan’s Column in Rome. Its construction, however, was plagued by delays and spiraling costs. It took six years, from 1821 to 1827, for the monument to be completed. The final cost was a hefty £8,000, a far cry from the initial estimate.

Look up! See the statue that crowns the column. It’s Dundas himself, sculpted by Francis Leggatt Chantrey. Interestingly, Dundas was nicknamed the “Seaman’s Friend”. This was due to his support for sailors in the Royal Navy. It’s fitting then that the monument was largely funded by subscriptions from these very sailors.

While Melville’s Monument is undeniably impressive, its legacy remains complex. Dundas’s role in delaying the abolition of the slave trade has sparked much debate and controversy. This debate culminated in the addition of a plaque in 2021. This plaque acknowledges the darker aspects of Dundas’s legacy. It serves as a reminder of the complexities of history and the need to engage with it in its entirety.
