“A specialist school,” the sign subtly suggests, “a place for unique learners.” That’s Melrose School. It stands here on Church Road. Melrose School is not just any school. It’s a place dedicated to children with special educational needs.
Melrose School focuses on pupils aged 5 to 16. These pupils often have social, emotional and mental health needs. Many have additional needs such as ADHD. Speech, language and communication needs or even past trauma are also considered.
Mainstream education sometimes cannot meet the needs of these children. Melrose School aims to provide a nurturing and safe environment. This helps children to re-engage in learning. All pupils benefit from small class sizes. They receive teaching from a highly skilled staff team.
Primary pupils are taught across four mixed-age classes at Melrose School. Years 7 to 9 pupils are taught in a ‘Nurture Provision’. This is an extension of the primary teaching model. It offers extended support. Pupils have one classroom base. They have consistent teaching staff for most of the day. Pupils in Key Stages 1 to 3 access the National Curriculum. The curriculum is differentiated. It is presented in creative and meaningful ways.
Key Stage 4 pupils continue to be taught in small classes. They have access to pastoral support from an assigned tutor. Specialist teachers teach specific subjects. Pupils work toward GCSE or equivalent qualifications. These qualifications are bespoke to each pupil’s needs. This enables pupils to move on to their next educational pathway. Melrose School works with alternative education providers. This offers a range of vocational courses. These provide further qualification options. Options are based on pupils’ needs and interests.
The curriculum at Melrose School is enhanced. It features weekly sessions called Social Development Opportunities. These sessions offer experiences that develop self-esteem and resilience. Cooking, rock climbing and sports coaching are examples.
Melrose School integrates various professionals into its environment. Pupils have access to specialist services. Therapeutic provision is available. This includes CAMHS Art and Play Therapists. Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists are available. Educational Psychologists Safer Schools Officers and Social Workers are also available. A Greenhouse Mentor completes the team.
Ofsted inspectors rated Melrose School as ‘Good’. This acknowledges the hard work and dedication of the staff. The school had 117 pupils. The school capacity is 158. Fifty-three percent of children are eligible for free school meals here at Melrose School.
