Do you see that modest building before us? That is the Melek Hatun Cami. This Istanbul mosque carries whispers of centuries past. Its story is interwoven with the lives of benefactors and the spirit of the community.

The Melek Hatun Cami stands in the vicinity of Mevlanakapi. It is on Melek Cesme Street in the Quarter of Melek Hatun. Its location reflects its deep roots in this historic neighborhood.

Melek Hatun herself was the benefactress. Her generosity made this sacred space possible. The exact date of construction is not known. Documents from 1496 mention the mosque attendant. This tells us the Melek Hatun Cami must have existed before then. Imagine the faithful gathering here for centuries!

The Melek Hatun Cami is also known as “Karaagaç Mosque”. This translates to “Elm Tree Mosque”. A large elm tree once stood at its threshold. This offered shade and a place for the community to gather.

Local legend speaks of a Mufti of Aleppo. Ebu’l-Cevad Efendi is said to be buried near the minaret. His presence adds another layer to the mosque’s rich history.

Architecturally, the Melek Hatun Cami presents a simple elegance. It features a square plan. The roof and ceiling are crafted from wood. Stone and brick form the walls. Inside, you will see a wooden minbar and ladies’ section. A plain mihrab in a round niche points the way to Mecca.

The minaret stands to the right of the mosque. Its entrance is inside the building. This is a unique architectural detail to observe.

Like many historical structures, the Melek Hatun Cami has faced challenges. It fell into disrepair over time. Thankfully, the community rallied to restore it. In 1957, benevolent locals renovated the Melek Hatun Cami true to its original design. Another renovation took place in 2011.

In front of the entrance is a narthex. It is made of reinforced concrete. The upper gallery covers the narthex and a row of the harim. It rests on four wooden pillars. The front of the upper gallery is covered with a wooden cage.

The ablution areas are accessed by going down from the courtyard. The minaret is made of stone and brick covered with cement. The minaret base is six-sided and the body is eight-sided. In a small burial area at the foot of the minaret, Mufti of Aleppo, Abu’l-Jawad Efendi, and his brother are buried.

The Melek Hatun Cami is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith, community, and the enduring power of good deeds. Take a moment to appreciate the history held within these walls.
