A century and a half of history whispers from these very grounds. Welcome to Melbourne Zoological Gardens a place where generations have connected with the animal kingdom.

Established in 1862 on land donated by the City of Melbourne this zoo was inspired by London Zoo itself. Initially it focused on acclimatising animals to Australia’s unique environment. The arrival of Albert Alexander Cochrane Le Souef in 1870 marked a turning point. He brought in more exotic animals and significantly improved the gardens and picnic areas. The zoo became a symbol of Melbourne’s cultural identity.

Think of Queenie the elephant a beloved resident from the early 1900s to the 1940s. Her presence brought joy to countless visitors. Imagine the thrill of seeing gorillas for the first time in Australia in 1984. Or the excitement surrounding the arrival of giant pandas on loan from China for Australia’s bicentennial.

Tragedy too struck these grounds. In 1989 a man tragically died after entering a lion’s enclosure. This incident underscores the inherent risks of working with wildlife.

The zoo evolved. The Trail of the Elephants a stunning exhibit opened in 2003. It won numerous awards and helped to raise awareness about elephant conservation. The iconic Lion Park from 1964 was eventually updated in 2014. Modernisation and conservation efforts go hand in hand.

In 2012 Melbourne Zoo celebrated 150 years. Australia Post even released a commemorative set of stamps. Today the zoo continues to amaze with its diverse exhibits its commitment to conservation and its ongoing contribution to Melbourne’s rich cultural tapestry.

Explore the Gorilla Rainforest the Asian rainforest and the Australian bush. Marvel at the Butterfly House the Reptile House and the Great Flight Aviary. You might even stumble upon a nocturnal animal during one of their popular Roar and Snore events.

The Melbourne Zoological Gardens isn’t just a zoo. It’s a living testament to Australia’s history its dedication to wildlife conservation and its enduring connection to the hearts and minds of Melburnians.
